Program Mission

The Access Scholarship exists to remove financial barriers that prevent youth from participating in meaningful arts education opportunities.​ Access Art believes every child deserves the opportunity to explore creativity, develop artistic skills, and experience the confidence and growth that comes from participation in the arts.​ Scholarship funding is awarded based on demonstrated financial need, commitment to the arts, and available program funding.​ Access Art is a fully self-funded nonprofit, and all scholarship awards are made possible through community support and proceeds from Access Art events.

Basic Eligibility Requirements

To apply for an Access Scholarship, students must:

✔ Be between the ages of 5–18
✔ Be a resident of an eligible service area currently Florida or North Carolina
✔ Show financial need
 

Eligible activities may include:

• Music lessons

• Instruments

• Visual arts classes

• Art supplies

• Dance classes (please see below)

• Workshops

• Other programs will be reviewed by the committee as long as they are creative learning experiences

Access Scholarships do not cover:

❌ Competitive programs ❌ Competition fees ❌ Travel expenses ❌ Costumes or uniforms related to competitions

❌ Past-due balances ❌ Expenses already incurred before approval of any scholarship

 

Dance programs, Access Art supports recreational, educational, and skill-development classes but does not fund competition preparation, extensive dance schedules or classes  or any competition-related expenses. We will consider singular introductory or a fully recreational class. All classes and schools are reviewed thoroughly and if classes are part of a competition routine/prep they will not be approved.

Scholarship Selection Process

Applications are reviewed on the 1st business day of every month.

The committee reviews applications and prioritizes awards based on:

1. Financial Need: The level of demonstrated financial hardship and assigned priority tier (see below).

2. Student Commitment:  Access Art carefully reviews the student's personal statement as part of the scholarship evaluation process. We want to understand why this opportunity matters to the student and how participation in the arts will make an impact in their life. Please take time and put thought into completing this section. Do not use AI to write your response. We are not evaluating grammar, spelling, or perfect punctuation, we are looking for your/ the student's genuine voice, personal experiences, passion, and the meaning behind their request. We understand that many families are facing financial challenges, and we know that asking for assistance can be difficult.

We want to understand: What does this opportunity mean to you or your child? Why is participating in this activity important? How would receiving this scholarship make a difference? A heartfelt, honest response is far more valuable to our review committee than a perfectly written answer. We want to hear your story, in your own words.

3. Impact: How the scholarship will remove barriers and create access to arts education. We use the statements to assess this (please see #2) 

4. Available Funding: Scholarships are awarded based on available funds. Meeting eligibility requirements does not guarantee an award.

 

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit:

✔ Completed application
✔ Student statement explaining interest in the arts
✔ Proof of financial need; you must provide proper documentation, read below as to what we are looking for 
✔ Program/provider information
✔ Cost and schedule information

Any applications that are NOT complete or do not provide proper documentation will not be considered and will be denied. Please read everything carefully

Financial Need Priority Levels

Because scholarship funding is limited, Access Art prioritizes applicants based on the level of financial need.

Tier 1: Highest Priority: Significant Financial Need

Applicants in Tier 1 represent youth facing the greatest financial barriers. Priority consideration is given to children whose families provide documentation showing they participate in:

Government Assistance Programs​

• SNAP (Food Assistance)

• WIC

• Housing assistance programs

• Free and Reduced Lunch

Required Documentation:​

• Letters of approval and eligibility 

• School/community referral letter of eligibility

• Applicants must provide an official eligibility verification letter or approval notice showing current enrollment and active eligibility for the program during the months in which the scholarship application is being submitted.

• Documentation must clearly include the applicant’s name, program eligibility status, and current effective dates. 

We do NOT accept:

• Benefit cards (including WIC, SNAP, or Medicaid cards) as proof of eligibility.

• Expired notices or inactive benefits

Tier 2: Demonstrated Financial Hardship

Applicants who do not qualify for Tier 1 but demonstrate a significant financial barrier may qualify under Tier 2.

Programs/Requirements:

• Medicaid

• Household income limitations

• Single-parent households experiencing financial hardship

• Significant unexpected family expenses

Required Documentation:

• Medicaid letter of verification, showing dates of eligibility and child's name

• Tax filings from previous year showing household filing status, household size and income (child must be claimed as dependents)

• Applicants must provide an official eligibility verification letter or approval notice showing current enrollment and active eligibility for the program during the months in which the scholarship application is being submitted.

• Documentation must clearly include the applicant’s name, program eligibility status, and current effective dates. 

• Explanation of hardship

• Other documentation demonstrating need

• We do NOT accept:

• Benefit cards (including WIC, SNAP, or Medicaid cards) as proof of eligibility.

• Expired notices or inactive benefits

Tier 3: Limited Access to Arts Opportunities

Applicants who may not meet Tier 1 or Tier 2 criteria but cannot reasonably afford arts opportunities may qualify for Tier 3.

Examples:

• Family can provide basic needs but cannot afford enrichment activities

• Student has strong interest but lacks access due to financial barriers

• Family requires partial assistance to participate

Awards in this tier are dependent upon available funding after higher-priority applicants are considered.

Scholarship Award Policies

Scholarships:

✔ May cover approved lessons, classes, supplies, instruments, workshops, or creative programs.

✔ Are paid directly to the provider.

✔ May be awarded for up to six months, months must be consecutive.

✔ Families may reapply after completion of the scholarship period.

✔ Classes, scholarship use must begin being used within 30 days of approval.​

Participation Requirements

Families receiving an Access Scholarship agree to:

Attendance

• Students must attend at least 80% of scheduled lessons/classes.

• Failure to maintain attendance may result in suspension or cancellation.

Communication

Families are responsible for maintaining communication with:

• Access Art and providing us with the invoice and receipt of payment 

• The instructor/provider

• Program staff

Financial Changes

Families must notify Access Art if circumstances significantly change during the scholarship period.

Scholarship Review Schedule

• Applications are reviewed on the first business day of each month

• Application should be submitted by the last day of the month to be reviewed on the 1st

• Applicants are notified of decisions within 7 business days review

• Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and awards depend on available funding

 

Access Art Scholarship Committee Rights

Access Art reserves the right to:

• Request additional documentation

• Prioritize applicants based on available funding

• Approve partial awards

• Decline applications that do not meet eligibility requirements

• Suspend or cancel scholarships at any time for any reason

• Scholarship decisions made by the Access Art Scholarship Committee are final.
